In the vast majority of states, SNAP payments are delivered through the use of pre-paid debit cards that have the recipients exact benefit amount already loaded onto them. Most of the first-month SNAP payments have already been given, which means that many families are already preparing for their February benefits, which are scheduled to begin on February 1. The SNAP benefits data represent the number of participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for each county, state, and the District of Columbia from 1981 to the latest available year. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is the name for what was formerly known as the federal Food Stamp Program, as of October 1, 2008.
